Another Birthday

My Dear Son:
I write this for your nineteenth birthday. It has been a pleasure to have you with us a few weeks in the past. You are about to leave us, yet our prayers shall follow you.
Another year of your life closes today. How can you look back upon it? Have you made advancement in the divine life? Have you increased in spirituality? Have you crucified self, with the affections and lusts? Have you an increased interest in the study of God's word? Have you gained decided victories over your own failings and waywardness? Oh, what has been the record of your life for the year which has now passed into eternity, never to be recalled?
As you enter upon a new year, let it be with an earnest resolve to have your course onward and upward. Let your life be more elevated and exalted than it has hitherto been. Make it your aim not to seek your own interest and pleasure, but to advance the cause of your Redeemer. Remain not in a position where you ever need help yourself, and where others have to guard you to keep you in the narrow way. You may be strong to exert a sanctifying influence upon others. You may be where your soul's interest will be awakened to do good to others, to comfort the sorrowful, strengthen the weak, and to bear your testimony for Christ whenever opportunity offers. Aim to honor God in everything, always and everywhere. Carry your religion into everything. Be thorough in whatever you undertake.
You have not experienced the saving power of God as it is your privilege, because you have not made it the great aim of your life to glorify Christ. Let every purpose you form, every work in which you engage, and every pleasure you enjoy, be to the glory of God. Let this be the language of your heart: I am thine, O God, to live for Thee, to work for Thee, and to suffer for Thee.
Many profess to be on the Lord's side, but they are not; the weight of all their actions is on Satan's side. By what means shall we determine whose side we are on? Who has the heart? With whom are our thoughts? Upon whom do we love to converse? Who has our warmest affections and our best energies? If we are on the Lord's side, our thoughts are with Him, and our sweetest thoughts are of Him. We have no friendship with the world; we have consecrated all that we have and are to Him. We long to bear His image, breathe His Spirit, do His will, and please Him in all things.
You should pursue so decided a course that none need to be mistaken in you. You cannot exert an influence upon the world without decision. Your resolutions may be good and sincere, but they will prove a failure unless you make God your strength and move forward with a firm determination of purpose. You should throw your whole heart into the cause and work of God. You should be in earnest to obtain an experience in the Christian life. You should exemplify Christ in your life.
You cannot serve God and mammon. You are either wholly on the Lord's side or on the side of the enemy. "He that is not with Me is against Me; and he that gathereth not with Me scattereth abroad." Some persons make their religious life a failure because they are always wavering and do not have determination. They are frequently convicted and come almost up to the point of surrendering all for God; but, failing to meet the point, they fall back again. While in this state the conscience is hardening and becoming less and less susceptible to the impressions of the Spirit of God. His Spirit has warned, has convicted, and has been disregarded, until it is nearly grieved away. God will not be trifled with. He shows duty clearly, and if there is a neglect to follow the light, it becomes darkness.
God bids you become a worker with Him in His vineyard. Commence just where you are. Come to the cross and there renounce self, the world, and every idol. Take Jesus into your heart fully. You are in a hard place to preserve consecration and to exert an influence which shall lead others from sin and pleasure and folly to the narrow way, cast up for the ransomed of the Lord to walk in.
Make an entire surrender to God; yield up everything unreservedly, and thus seek for that peace which passes understanding. You cannot draw nourishment from Christ unless you are in Him. If not in Him, you are a branch that is withered. You do not feel your want of purity and true holiness. You should feel an earnest desire for the Holy Spirit and should pray earnestly to obtain it. You cannot expect the blessing of God without seeking for it. If you used the means within your reach you would experience a growth in grace and would rise to a higher life.
It is not natural for you to love spiritual things; but you can acquire that love by exercising your mind, the strength of your being, in that direction. The power of doing is what you need. True education is the power of using our faculties so as to achieve beneficial results. Why is it that religion occupies so little of our attention, while the world has the strength of brain, bone, and muscle? It is because the whole force of our being is bent in that direction. We have trained ourselves to engage with earnestness and power in worldly business, until it is easy for the mind to take that turn. This is why Christians find a religious life so hard and a worldly life so easy. The faculties have been trained to exert their force in that direction. In religious life there has been an assent to the truths of God's word, but not a practical illustration of them in the life.
To cultivate religious thoughts and devotional feelings is not made a part of education. These should influence and control the entire being. The habit of doing right is wanting. There is spasmodic action under favorable influences, but to think naturally and readily upon divine things is not the ruling principle of the mind.
There is no need of being spiritual dwarfs if the mind is continually exercised in spiritual things. But merely praying for this, and about this, will not meet the necessities of the case. You must habituate the mind to concentration upon spiritual things. Exercise will bring strength. Many professed Christians are in a fair way to lose both worlds. To be half a Christian and half a worldly man makes you about one-hundredth part a Christian and all the rest worldly.
Spiritual living is what God requires, yet thousands are crying out: "I don't know what is the matter; I have no spiritual strength, I do not enjoy the Spirit of God." Yet the same ones will become active and talkative, and even eloquent, when talking upon worldly matters. Listen to such ones in meeting. About a dozen words are spoken in hardly an audible voice. They are men and women of the world. They have cultivated worldly propensities until their faculties have become strong in that direction. Yet they are as weak as babes in regard to spiritual things, when they should be strong and intelligent. They do not love to dwell upon the mystery of godliness. They know not the language of heaven and are not educating their minds so as to be prepared to sing the songs of heaven or to delight in the spiritual exercises which will there engage the attention of all.
Professed Christians, worldly Christians, are unacquainted with heavenly things. They will never be brought to the gates of the New Jerusalem to engage in exercises which have not hitherto specially interested them. They have not trained their minds to delight in devotion and in meditation upon things of God and heaven. How, then, can they engage in the services of heaven? how delight in the spiritual, the pure, the holy in heaven, when it was not a special delight to them upon earth? The very atmosphere there will be purity itself. But they are unacquainted with it all. When in the world, pursuing their worldly vocations, they knew just where to take hold and just what to do. The lower order of faculties being in so constant exercise, grew, while the higher, nobler powers of the mind, not being strengthened by use, are incapable of awaking at once to spiritual exercises. Spiritual things are not discerned, because they are viewed with world-loving eyes, which cannot estimate the value and glory of the divine above the temporal.
The mind must be educated and disciplined to love purity. A love for spiritual things should be encouraged; yea, must be encouraged, if you would grow in grace and in the knowledge of the truth. Desires for goodness and true holiness are right so far as they go; but if you stop here, they will avail nothing. Good purposes are right, but will prove of no avail unless resolutely carried out. Many will be lost while hoping and desiring to be Christians; but they made no earnest effort, therefore they will be weighed in the balances and found wanting. The will must be exercised in the right direction. I will be a wholehearted Christian. I will know the length and breadth, the height and depth, of perfect love. Listen to the words of Jesus: "Blessed are they which do hunger and thirst after righteousness: for they shall be filled." Ample provisions are made by Christ to satisfy the soul that hungers and thirsts for righteousness.
The pure element of love will expand the soul for higher attainments, for increased knowledge of divine things, so that it will not be satisfied short of the fullness. Most professed Christians have no sense of the spiritual strength they might obtain were they as ambitious, zealous, and persevering to gain a knowledge of divine things as they are to obtain the paltry, perishable things of this life. The masses professing to be Christians have been satisfied to be spiritual dwarfs. They have no disposition to make it their object to seek first the kingdom of God and His righteousness; hence godliness is a hidden mystery to them, they cannot understand it. They know not Christ by experimental knowledge.
Let those men and women who are satisfied with their dwarfed, crippled condition in divine things be suddenly transported to heaven and for an instant witness the high, the holy state of perfection that ever abides there,--every soul filled with love; every countenance beaming with joy; enchanting music in melodious strains rising in honor of God and the Lamb; and ceaseless streams of light flowing upon the saints from the face of Him who sitteth upon the throne, and from the Lamb; and let them realize that there is higher and greater joy yet to experience, for the more they receive of the enjoyment of God, the more is their capacity increased to rise higher in eternal enjoyment, and thus continue to receive new and greater supplies from the ceaseless sources of glory and bliss inexpressible,--could such persons, I ask, mingle with the heavenly throng, participate in their songs, and endure the pure, exalted, transporting glory that emanates from God and the Lamb? Oh, no! their probation was lengthened for years that they might learn the language of heaven, that they might become "partakers of the divine nature, having escaped the corruption that is in the world through lust." But they had a selfish business of their own to engage the powers of their minds and the energies of their beings. They could not afford to serve God unreservedly and make this a business. Worldly enterprises must come first and take the best of their powers, and a transient thought is devoted to God. Are such to be transformed after the final decision: "He that is holy, let him be holy still," "he which is filthy, let him be filthy still"? Such a time is coming.
Those who have trained the mind to delight in spiritual exercises are the ones who can be translated and not be overwhelmed with the purity and transcendent glory of heaven. You may have a good knowledge of the arts, you may have an acquaintance with the sciences, you may excel in music and in penmanship, your manners may please your associates, but what have these things to do with a preparation for heaven? What have they to do to prepare you to stand before the tribunal of God?
Be not deceived. God is not mocked. Nothing but holiness will prepare you for heaven. It is sincere, experimental piety alone that can give you a pure, elevated character and enable you to enter into the presence of God, who dwelleth in light unapproachable. The heavenly character must be acquired on earth, or it can never be acquired at all. Then begin at once. Flatter not yourself that a time will come when you can make an earnest effort easier than now. Every day increases your distance from God. Prepare for eternity with such zeal as you have not yet manifested. Educate your mind to love the Bible, to love the prayer meeting, to love the hour of meditation, and, above all, the hour when the soul communes with God. Become heavenly-minded if you would unite with the heavenly choir in the mansions above.
A new year of your life now commences. A new page is turned in the book of the recording angel. What will be the record upon its pages? Shall it be blotted with neglect of God, with unfulfilled duties? God forbid. Let a record be stamped there which you will not be ashamed to have revealed to the gaze of men and angels.

In Hong Kong

After spending Chinese New Year's in Malaysia and the latter part of it in Singapore - it was now time to explore Hong Kong. Honestly, the only thing that I really wanted to see in Hong Kong was Abram LaRue's gravesite.

For those who do not know who Abram LaRue is, he was the first Adventist missionary to China - his story is amazing. Maybe I'll write a blog on that some day.

Either way, I have included the location of his gravesite in the cemetary in Hong Kong.

Two and half years later, I have finally completed my Master's at Southern with a double emphasis in Evangelism and Religious Studies. To my knowledge, I have been informed that I am the youngest of all their MA in Religion graduates (ever), the first (and so far the only) to do a double emphasis, and the first to be a member of the National Honor Society at the graduate level within the program. Praise God! All glory to His name. It is possible! Amen!

Visit to Bern and other places

Today, a good friend, Leandro, from the church I attend in Geneva decided it was time that I visit a little of Switzerland. So our first stop, Bern. We didn't stay too long, but I got to see the clock tick for the the little thing to come out. And then we saw the home of Albert Einstein.

After that we made our way to the Château d'Oex. It was pretty nice, except it was freezing cold. I felt bad for my friend. For some reason I was just exhausted. But afterwards, we went to what are now some of my favorite places in Europe - Montreux and La Ligniere. They were both wonderful. La Ligniere is an Adventist Clinique (Clinic) in Switzerland and rated one of the best private health care facilities in the entire country. Just an amazing place with a very interesting history. Anyway, enjoy the pictures!

LSU President Visits

ACE - After Comprehensive's Experience

Well, I am back in France after taking my Comprehensive Exams. I would go into all the details of why I had to take them back in the US, but let's not discuss that. I think I did alright. I mean, I studied pretty hard, especially for the one that I thought I had my highest chance of failing, Revelation.

On Sabbath I visited the Chung's, and Mrs. Chung made me, like always, a very wonderful meal. Oh, how much I miss Korean food. Good times, good memories, ah...

Sunday, I took the comp's. Monday, I took more comp's. And I barely made my flight (thank you Cha for getting me there), and flew back to London, slept for a few hours at my Auntie's house, realized that I was late, caught a cab, met Jess, made my flight, and am back and exhausted!

Leaving London

Around noon my cousin's boyfriend took me to the British Museum, a favorite spot of Malcolm. As you can see, we hit a little traffic. But that's okay. I figured I would post some highlights from the afternoon.

After we were not allowed into the special Babylon Exhibit (which I forgot was still taking place), we walked around a bit more and I left slightly disappointed. But it's okay, we ate a pretty good vegan restaurant and then I was off from the train, Gatwick Express, to the airport. Southern here I come.

At and with GC Officials

Today was one packed day of seeing the General Conference (GC), which also houses the NAD (North American Division), Griggs University, BRI (Biblical Research Institute), Ellen White Estate, and many more other things.

After our personal guided tour we went down to the Ellen White Estate and went into the Vault. Then we had lunch with GC officials - such as the President, Editor of the Review, Director of BRI, Director of EGW Estate (Jim Nix), etc. For the evening we had a small snack at Jim Nix's house, where he told us stories of pioneers. Very inspiring! All of it!

So... I missed my flight. And, I would like to suggest that it is not my fault. My cousin suggested, why don’t we stop and get some food. So we did, and although it didn’t take that long. It took a little while to get the bill and yes... I missed my flight by only seconds. What a shame. I actually really wanted to see the Review and Herald Pub. Assn. I’ve still never been there and they are supposed to have a private tour. In some ways I think the Lord needs to spend more time alone with me.

However, my good friend Kim still picked me up and took me to get some great food (observe below). It was really good. Thanks Kimmie! It’s almost a bit odd, because we haven’t known each other that long or even that much. But she was kind enough to pick me up and take me to my hotel. Hope to see you on Sabbath!

EGW Research Center Revisited

Left for Texas. Thanks to my cousin, I have arrived safely back in Keene for the first time in years. I’ve missed it. Good to see old friends. I’m currently staying at the Hadley’s and it brings back so many wonderful memories. However, I am greatly pained to see Mr. Hadley in the state that he is in. Oh, how I wish he could see Jesus come so soon.
It is also wonderful to see what has become of the Ellen White Research Center. Now it’s called Synergy. I personally think they need a new acronym, because I can never remember what that stands for. It’s also a blessing to see Justin, mon ami. Il est bon person.
In two days I will be at the General Conference. And mysteriously, the Lord will speak through me this weekend. Hopefully I can see some friends from the area.

GYC, simply, a blessing. After GYC we went to Napa Valley with a car full. It’s probably better if I don’t describe too many details. But we visited Ellen White’s house, and I gave them a tour. It was wonderful. The people still remembered me and were willing to open it up at night for me to give a private (2 hour) tour. What a time.

Swede's have come

My friends from Sweden arrived tonight. It was funny, from the moment they arrived they started taking pictures like crazy. However, sadly enough, not all of their bags have come. So we’ll see what happens. Hopefully we get them soon because we are trying to leave for GYC ASAP.

Last night I arrived in Arizona. What a flight - Geneva to Amsterdam, Amsterdam to Detroit, Detroit to Phoenix. Either way, I had to turn in my last research paper for my MA. Finally! I’ve worked pretty hard on it, so I guess we’ll see what happens.

Before our return to Collonges, we stopped at Riquewihr. I didn't take that many pictures, but long story short, there was virtually nothing for me to eat. :sigh: When we returned there was a wonderful vespers service. Only a few more days now, and I will be home.

Natzwiller - Strasbourg

Today has made a deep impression on me. We visited a concentration camp near the French-German boarder. Obviously, it used to be in Germany. But, either way, there was a seriousness amongst all and a reverence that I rarely see. At the same rate it caused me to think, "what will happen when Adventists are the one's being looked for?"

After this most serious morning, we made our way to Strasbourg. I hope that you enjoy and reflect on the pictures.

Votre Ville - Colmar

Today was quite interesting. We are currently in Colmar and will be going to Strasbourg. Donc, Colmar is where Pretzel are famous and the little streets look like you are in some ancient little town with a lot of history. It was a nice place and a great time. However, if you are veggie, you must watch out. It's a bit more difficult.

Fête des Lumières Ville de Lyon

Today was our adventure through Lyon. It was the Fête des Lumières (Festival of Lights), but before the festivities began we did a little exploration and discovered a very old baptistery from the 4th to 12th century. Amazing to me, because it seems to indicated a full immersion. After that the next photo is of the Des Dessinées Dès 1550. Sometime from the 1st to 3rd century après J.-C. Absolutely amazing!

Since the 29th, I’ve been in Sweden. It’s been wonderful. It’s a little cold though. What I believe has fascinated me the most is that from nearly the moment I have arrived, we have had Bible studies at nearly all times. From the time we have breakfast, to lunch, to dinner, and afterwards. The people here are so hungry. It’s wonderful, we are trying to organize for a revival youth meeting some time next year. Hopefully we will soon see the fruits of this. I think tomorrow we are going to Stockholm, so I will try to post some more pictures then.

London

It was a late beginning this morning. But I am currently reading through the chapter on John Huss from The Great Controversy. Very good read.

Eventually, my cousin came to my Aunt’s house and we were off to the National Gallery. From there we saw the London Eye and took pictures of the House of Parliament and Big Ben. And then a quick trip through China Town. It was quite enjoyable. Hope the pictures turned out well.

Getting to London

Today was a late rise. Even after waking up, I just laid down and then my friend and I began to talk until it was necessary to get up. For lunch we ate a Pasty (pronounced Past-ie). It was pretty good. Then, I quickly caught my train to London.

After arriving in London, I waited for nearly an hour and a half, while also trying to call my Aunt. Finally, I decided to pay for the internet and called her. We quickly reconnected (for the first time in nearly 20 years) and were off to get me an Oyster Card - a convenient card that I can use at any place with its symbol, such as a tube (subway) or bus. After getting an Oyster Card we were off to a Vegan restaurant. The food was pretty good, but a little oily and salty for my preference.

We then arrived at her place. Spent some time talking with my cousin and her boyfriend and eventually fell asleep.

Birmingham, England

Since my friend and I spent a good amount of the night and early morning talking, we were both very exhausted. Nonetheless, we made it early to Leamington Spa Mission. It was a unique service with communion at the end. Afterwards, we stayed for a bit and ate there. Potluck is a bit different here, you bring your own food and have your own meal with others there who do the same.

One interesting thing. I met a man who was a mission for about 5 years and is now studying Theology at Newbold College. So we were able to talk for quite some time about some things.

For the afternoon the church made shoe boxes to send to some foreign country. After which my friend and I went for a walk around some park and then return to their place. That was basically Sabbath. After its closing I treated her out for her birthday at some Italian restaurant. It was pretty good. But now calculating the price, I’m not sure if it was fully worth it. I guess it is also not so easy to go out to eat and be a vegan - even though I made a lot of requests in my order.

Château de la Fontainebleau

Our last day we had a late start because of factors that are probably best to forget. But we had a visite libre du château de la Fontainebleau. It was amazing. After which, for those who were staying, we caught a train to Paris.

Simply, I missed my flight, had to pay for a new one and am now in Birmingham, England. When I arrived in Birmingham I felt interrogated by the immigrations official. But I guess that’s just how they have to be. We then took a train from Birmingham to Coventry, where I accidently forgot my backpack on the train and had to quickly run back. Then we took a bus to Warwick (pronounced Warick) Uni (University).

le Louvre et Paris

Today was our day to be on our own. So today a few of us actually went to the sights that we passed by yesterday. We went to l’Arc de Triomphe, les Grands boulevards, le Louvre, la Opera, et Notre Dame.

Most of our day was spent at the Louvre where I was able to see a good portion of archaeology and a quick trip to see the Mona Lisa. I have obviously posted pictures below, so there is no need to really explain what I’ve seen.

For the evening we had a rendez-vous au pied de la tour Eiffel à 19h15. We were able to go to the top of the Eiffel Tower and take some wonderful pictures. After which, we had a départ ensuite pour le port de la Bourdonnais: promenade nocturne en bateau parisien sur la Seine. Basically, we took a trip down the Seine and were able to see many famous bridges in Paris.

Versailles et Paris

Have you ever heard of Versailles? Well, that was where we were at for a good portion of our day. We had an interesting guidée du châtue. Of which we afterward had a lunch. This was the first time I ordered my food without the aid of anyone in French. It turned out well enough to where I got what I wanted and was able to ask for my check afterward.

Then we left for Paris to continue our guided tour. We pasted by some major sights: les Champs-Èlysées, l’Arc de Triomphe, la Tour Eiffel, les Grands boulevards, les Invalides (where we stopped and saw the Crypt, or tomb, of Napoleon), Notre Dame (where the President of France just happened to be, so we were not able to really see it), etc.

After our tour we were dropped off near Montmarte where we could walk around. We spotted Moulin Rouge and also found a wonderful view of Paris, then at 19h30 (7:30) we had Dîner en commun sur la butte Montmartre. By the way, if you are vegan, which I am, it is very hard to eat around here. But it is possible.

Château de Chambord, Cathédrale de Chartres, et Paris

This morning we had an early petit-déjeuner à l’hôtel (breakfast at the hotel). About 09h00, we left for château de Chambord. This is one amazing castle. After spending a few hours there we went to Chartres, had lunch, and then visited the Cathédrale de Chartres. It was amazing. Officially the first Cathédrale I have seen in Europe. A few minutes before leaving, though, a friend and I were able to run up the North Tower and take a few shots. Truly a wondrous view.

Afterwards we found ourselves officially leaving and arriving in Paris. Since we were able to travel around a bit after we checked into our hotel a few of us were off at once. I’ve included pictures of some of the sights we saw.

Des Hospices de Beaune et Blois

Today we began our journey to Paris, France. The language institute that I am part of has a few travel experiences that it brings its students to throughout the year. And the first major one is to Paris with a few stops on the way and one after.

Today we visited libre des Hospices de Beaune. Where we had out déjeuner (lunch). The Hospices de Beaune was a hospital that functioned for years. With amazing architecture and more amazing artwork, this place was just enjoyable to be at.

We continued our journey to Blois where we stayed at à l’hôtel. It was wonderful. We were able to walk around and take some pictures. So I have included those for you.

Up the Seléve

Today the language institute took IFLE student to Chamonix (pronounced Cha-mo-ni). Chamonix is a wonderful place with tall mountain ranges. There are times in life when one meets people that just pass by and recollections are not so meaningful. But then there are times where one meets people who will affect and truly impact them. As for the last few weeks, this is what a group of relatively recent friends have become; a group that has made a powerful impact in my life. And to want them to be here would be selfish. So, I am thankful for the time that I have had to spend with them.
 The memories have become many; and as one said to me, “It is as if we have known you for a long time.” I am moved to the same sentiments. As another has said, “We know why God sent you to France. It was to meet us.” And, if for no other reason, I am sure that I have already fulfilled part of my mission here in France. I have been truly touched to a part of my being that has needed to be filled by friendship and joy.

The fact is official. The words are certain. The reality is true. I miss all of you and I hope to meet all of you once again. May the Lord add his watch, care, and grace over each and everyone of you. Truly, I have been helped to see from the beginning of my European journey the true reason as to why I exist - to help spread the Three Angeles’ Messages to all the world in this generation as a young person!

Kansas Senate Prayer

I had received this from my ethics professor, Jack Blano, a few months ago. I hope you enjoy.

When Pastor Joe Wright was asked to open the new session of the Kansas Senate, everyone was expecting the usual politically correct generalities. But on January 23, 1996, what they heard instead was a stirring prayer, passionately calling out country to repentance and righteousness.

The response was immediate–with a number of legislators walking out during the prayer. In six short weeks Central Christian Church logged more than 5,000 phone calls, with only 47 of those calls responding negatively. Commentator Paul Harvey aired Pastor Joe Wright’s prayer on the radio and received a larger response to this program than any other program Paul Harvey has ever aired. In addition, Central Christian Church is now receiving international requests for copies of this prayer from India, Africa, and Korea.

The prayer is reprinted below as an encouragement and challenge for each of us to stand for the truth of the Gospel wherever the Lord gives us opportunity.

Great Booking Experience

This afternoon I finally got enough money to purchase a ticket for a friends wedding in Toronto. So as soon as I got off work I drove to Chatt. Airport to have them help me with my ticketing; but they recommended that I just call the number provided. Since a I had cancelled a flight, I was told that I could use the money for that flight on a future flight within a year. But, they still said it would actually be cheaper to call.

Well, as soon as I arrived I called the number got transfered to two different people who finally transfered me to international travels. After going through my ticketing with great ease (one thing that I like about Delta), the ticketing agent told me that he lived in Montreal, and then I told him that I was just there a few months ago. We talked about Montreal a little bit and then asked me a few questions. We started to talk about the snow there, but then I said that I have been stuck in Montreal twice because of snow storms. However, I was soon going to move to MI, which struck his curiousity. He asked, so I told him that I was going to do my Ph.D. there, "Oh in what?" He said. "In church history."

"Oh, really, its unfortunate that there are less people who are even my age, and I'm 38, who go to church." And I said, "Oh, you are a Christian?" "Yes, I am." "Really?" He then told me about his sons, and then we got back to the topic of Church History and asked me what I want to do with that, so I told him "I really want to make church history exciting. People think that is boring, but I want to show them the excitement that church history has." "Really, so what do you talk about?" After a little while, I told him, "You know what I have really appreciated your services for my ticket and I would really like to send you a book for free on church history. Its a great book, actually a little famous, and I really think that you would like it. Its called The Great Controversy and it goes through church history." "Really?" "Yeah, I mean if you want it." "Yeah, I will just give you my address." After that I obtained his address, we talked a little bit and now I'm going to try to find a French version of the book.

Praise the Lord. I would not have talked with this man unless the Lord led me to him.

Talents - COL 363

I just finished devotions and came across some powerful statements from the chapter on "Talents" in the book Christ Object Lessons, p. 363.

The Lord measures with exactness every possibility for service. The unused capabilities are as much brought into account as are those that are improved. For all that we might become through the right use of our talents God holds us responsible. We shall be judged according to what we ought to have done, but did not accomplish because we did not use our powers to glorify God. Even if we do not lose our souls, we shall realize in eternity the result of our unused talents. For all the knowledge and ability that we might have gained and did not, there will be an eternal loss.
But when we give ourselves wholly to God and in our work follow his directions, He makes Himself responsible for its accomplishment. He would not have us conjecture as to the success of our honest endeavors. Not once should we even think of failure. We are to co-operate with One who knows no failure.
We should not talk of our own weakness and inability. This is a manifest distrust of God, a denial of His word. When we murmur because of our burdens, or refuse the responsibilities He calls upon us to bear, we are virtually saying that He is a hard master, that He requires what He has not given us power to do.

I stayed in a really nice house where I took this picture. And then afterwards we went to a really wonderful church service. It was quite different. You take your shoes off, and then you go upstairs for services.

When the service was over I was taken on a ride to some waterfall. It was pretty cool.

Saturday night we had durian and some other fruits. Afterwards, we went to play some bad mitten. Let's just say, I'm not that great at that sport.

The following morning we had something that was really good, but I can't remember what it is called. After that on our way to Singapore we had one last stop at a Japanese Restaurant - and since they had Vegan options it was really good!

Last Sabbath in my home Church

Last weekend in Manabogue SDA Church. It was pleasant. Since there was an event at the Angeles City Church I was invited to speak at the Sapang Mai Sac SDA Church. That was truly a great experience. I truly love the youth group there.

When the whole AY program was finished I didn’t want to leave, and we spent a bit of time speak with the individuals. It was great. After we returned to where I was staying, we arranged for us (my Auntie, Uncle, cousin and the AY from the church) to all go out to eat in San Fernando. It was great; but the food was okay. Good times, good times.

Since we got back late, I have decided to just stay with my cousin JR and Auntie Merlue.

Preparation

I spent most of the day just reading and preparing for the upcoming meetings that will start next week. We have decided that we will hold a Revival at Angeles City SDA Church. This being done instead of speaking in Cavite. But today was mainly a recovery day.

Other than for that, I spoke for vespers. It was good to see my family there for support and ect. I really hope that the messages that I speak are really getting to the heart of the situation in some of these places. I can tell that many Christians have become lax-a-daisy about Christianity. Oh, that we would be more faithful.

Baguio - The Drive Back

This morning we got up and went to some famous view, but it was foggy and we weren’t able to see anything. So we went to check out, got something to eat, made a quick stop to some temple, and were on our way to the Strawberry fields where I got my small souvenirs and a lot of pasalubong’s for my family.

After a long drive, we arrived about ¾ of the way back to Angeles and went out to eat a very nice Pizza Hut. In front of the restaurant there was an old train from WWII which was used by the Japanese.

By now, I just know that I am tired of driving, and tired all together.

Baguio - The Arrival

The first time in 20 years. Literally, the last time that I was here I was 3 years old. It was a bit of a long drive. We had to get the seatbelt fixed, especially after yesterday’s situation. When we arrived we ate at a vegetarian restaurant at the SM in Baguio, and then met with my cousin JR, who I haven’t seen in 6 years.

Then we went to the mission office and were able to get a place to stay. Then they talked to the people about me doing the Wednesday night Prayer Meeting. We quickly went out to eat and returned so that I could speak. I discovered that the people present were mostly LE’s, so I spoke to them as a former LE. When I was finished, I discovered that the rest of the congregation consisted of several Conference officals. I then felt very humble to have spoken in front of them. It was nice to be invited back though.

Either way, it was a long day, and it will be a longer one tomorrow.

Ticket in PI

This morning my Uncle Boy took me to the Angeles City Adventist School. But he picked me up too early. I really needed to study a lot and I don’t think that people are understanding how much I really have to do. It was okay, even though I am not currently feeling that way. Things will work out and I was able to get a few things completed.

Later in the afternoon when I was supposed to return I went with my Kuya Allen to his work site, and then on the way back I was talking with my cousin’s “wife” about how I got a $500 ticket in the US once. Then right after I had mentioned the story I got pulled over for not having a seatbelt and driver’s license – the charge, 500 pesos. I felt kind of bad.

Afterwards, I read a bit at the school and am now back at my Uncle’s house. Tomorrow, Baguio.

MOA and MAMC

Well, Auntie Merlue came to Uncle Boy’s house, and we decided to go to the local Adventist school so that I could ask them if I could study there during the day. I need a place to get away. They agreed, and then Auntie Merlue and I took a bus to Manila, then a train to MAMC (Manila Adventist Medical Center). When we got to the Sanitarium I greatly needed to go to the bathroom. And then when I got out, my cousin was there. I felt kind of bad, because I was supposed to be a surprise, and then I didn’t even recognize her.

Afterwards, we ate at the Sanitarium, and then I found out that my friends brother knew my cousin; so my cousin was texting my friends brother, and as she was texting him, in he walked into the cafeteria. Thus, I met Professor Gavas.

During the afternoon we went to MOA (Mall of Asia) to do a few errands for my cousin and then returned before 5 so that my cousin would not be late for choir practice. Since Professor Gavas is the conductor, I asked him for a picture, since I was unsure if I would see him again.

The drive back was a bit long, but my Auntie and I talked nearly the whole time, so it didn’t seem like it was that far.

Happy Mother’s Day!

It is official, I have called my mother 3 times, and each time I either got no answer or a full mailbox. One of the times I was actually able to leave a message. Either way, the plan was for me to go with Jing-Jing to MAMC (Manila Adventist Medical Center) and stay in Manila so that I could go to immigration tomorrow. The following is what took place:

During the afternoon I went with Uncle Boy and Auntie Eva to see Karren’s program at San Fernando; but before we left, I left my things at Auntie Merlue’s house because that is what I thought she had said. Later I found out otherwise. So when we got to San Fernando the program was beginning to take a long while. A while in which, I was growing more impatient. When Karren actually got up, I had discovered that her and her friends were not going to sing, but rather were going to dance. And I was like, “what?” So when she got up and the power went out, I was like, “it’s a sign, it’s a sign!” Eventually, the power came back on, and then it went out again, and I repeated the same thing. After sometime the power came back on again.

When the power finally came on for good, they did there dance – all of which I would be ashamed to say, “Yes, she was in church yesterday.” When the program was finished, I was so infuriated that I did not know what to say. Then we ate (all of which, I was unaware of), and I kept thinking to myself, I need to get back. I’m supposed to go to Manila, tonight! Long story short, I didn’t go to Manila. I’m stuck at the house. And I’m not in the best mood.

Oh, Lord, help me. I know not what to do.

First Sabbath Back

Sabbath – truly an amazing day. It was always wonderful to come to Sabbath, knowing that you are a particularly special guest and greatly to be wanted. I truly hope that wherever I am, I can extend this kind of experience for those who are in my company on Sabbath.

For SS I was told that I was going to lead the lesson study. It was interesting, because I honestly, did not study the lesson; but I knew the lesson, because it covered a topic that was very dear to my heart when I read the book Desire of Ages. The SS seemed to turn into a decision of various questions that church members have seemed to want to ask for a long time. It seems that there questions were answered.

The sermon seemed to go well too. My cousin and his wife also visited, and it was good to see them there. I really hope that the message reached the people. I did notice that very early into the sermon that one lady in the back recorded the entire sermon on her cell phone. I was hoping to meet with her afterwards, but she had quickly left.

When we got back, I ate lunch, and then I was off to speak for AY. That was interesting, because I knew that many of the youth were at CLAA. Either way, there were enough for me to preach, and afterwards I was quickly told that I would be invited to speak again the following week. It is always amazing to note those who are listening very intently. Sometimes, it seems that people do not realize that I am watching them as much as they are watching me. The rest of the Sabbath was spent with family.

One thing, was this evening a group from Angeles church, called the Visionaries, came to sing to me. That was quite interesting. It really makes you feel appreciated at such a church.

Angeles Vespers

I spent nearly the entire day at CLAA. It was good. I got to meet with many of the youth from the Pampanga region, a place that I feel a close affinity.

After morning worship, the group went to an orphanage and sang to the kids there. It was one of the sweetest sights, for the kids then sang for us. It was almost heart breaking to know that these wonderful children were orphans. Many places do not realize the blessings that they have, and in many cases, this could include myself.

Afterwards we went back to the campus and had breakfast, played some games, and then I took some of my last few pictures. It was almost hard to say goodbye, even though I had only met many of them that day or the day prior.

On the drive back, we went through a huge rainfall. Sometimes I can forget how much it actually rains in the Philippines. But we also made a quick stop to visit my Ate Raquel (she really is my cousin). When we finally arrived, I went to visit Kuya Gary because his wife just had a child. Then we had a little time to eat and then go off to vespers, where I spoke for Angeles City SDA Church. I believe it went well. I have been requested to speak for AY tomorrow and for Vespers next week, and possible AY also. We’ll see.

CLAA

Today I went to the Central Luzon Adventist Academy (CLAA). It was a great adventure, excluding the fact that my cousin had not gone there in years, so we were misplaced for a little while. But we eventually got there and they settled me into one of the dormitory rooms. They were very kind to me.

Afterwards, I was given a tour of the campus and was introduced to many of various people across the campus. This weekend is supposed to be a Youth gathering for the Pampanga region. So I was thoroughly blessed to be a part of it. It was also blessed to meet one family on campus who were teachers at the school – they gave me great insight into understanding better how to approach some things in Filipino culture.

Later, I did the sundown worship, which seemed to be taken very positively. Sometime later, I spoke with one of the former Theology major’s from AUP. It was a good conversation. He had many questions to ask me, and it seems that whenever I am being asked questions the Lord seems to provide wonderful answers. But as the night drew near I took a shower before there was no more water. But that too was interesting, for there was no more light. I don’t think I’ve taken a shower like that in a long time.

Balibago

Today was greatly fulfilling. I woke up at 3:50. I think that’s the first time in a very long time where I actually woke up and stayed up. The room was dark, there was no noise – just perfect for devotions. I’ve been reading Christ Object Lessons and it was good.

Afterwards, I did read a lot for my homework assignments. On top of that, I was able to really hammer down a lot of material for the presentations for AYC. Its going to be exciting. Initially, I was a bit concerned; but it was like the Lord was just sending me message after message. Then a few hours later, when everyone had woken up, I had breakfast and was off for the day.

Let’s see… we went to Auntie Merlue’s house; the new Angeles City SM, so I could get some money; to Clark to see if I can get some documentations for dual citizenship and a Filipino passport. But to no avail, today is a holiday. So my Kuya Allen and I came back, ate lunch, and went to visit Kuya Tristan, who wasn’t at work. After which we decide to go to Balibago, took some pictures, and came back again.

Somewhere in between there we went to some place that I can’t remember what it was called; but it was really cool. It displayed different aspects of the Northern Filipino history and original culture. Very educational – although there was very little displayed written information. Regardless, my cousin enjoyed it a bit. It was good, we got to have a very good talk.

When we got back, I quickly changed and was off to prayer meeting. Prayer meeting was good, and I have been requested to speak for every Friday and Sabbath afternoon that I am here. Possibly even speak tomorrow at CLAA (Central Luzon Adventist Academy) for some youth event. We’ll see if the Lord wills it.

I’m Home [in PI]

After nearly three years. After over 8,000 miles – after driving from Michigan to Atlanta, then flying from Atlanta to Seoul, from Seoul to Kulua Lumpur, from Kulua Lumpur to Manila, and then driving from Manila to Angeles. After a 14 hour flight to Seoul, a one and half hour layover, a 6 hour flight to Kulua Lumpur, a 12 hour layover, a 3 ½ hour flight to Manila (1 hour to find each other and get my things), and after a 4 hour drive (because of traffic), I am finally here!

What a long trip. I don’t think that I’ve ever had one such like that. Either way, the KLIA (Kulua Lumpur International Airport) was extremely nice. I also forgot how many Muslims there were in Malaysia – all of which were nice. I was over the limit on my bag from KL to MNL, and the lady let me pass. I was over 10 kg’s over. So I’m going to have to figure something out on the way back. But I had a lot of spare time (a good 12 hour layover), of which I don’t think I will ever try to do again. I did accomplished a lot, though. Took many pictures, walked the entire airport at least 10 times, and read quite a bit.

Oddly, and I don’t normally say this, but, the weather is just right for me right now. Its not too cold and its not too hot. I actually really like it. I guess you know your Filipino when you can take the weather, haha.

I’m excited though. I’m going to try to do so much while I’m here. I hope that I can go to Bataan, Bagio, Manila, and others. But what I’m really excited about is I might have enough money for my cousin and I to go to Hong Kong. We’ll see though, because I really want to see more of PI on this trip – but Hong Kong, oh, man.

Hopefully, this trip will be more than just seeing family (even though that is what I love to do), but for me to help grasp what defines me – my history, culture, my life.

I think one of the oddest things for me is that I am nearly becoming the only cousin, who was born in the Philippines, who is not married. I think Karen, JR, and his sister are the only ones left. Well, I guess my sister too, but her case is different. Its strange, because everyone is saying, get a girlfriend, just don’t get married. What kind of advice?!? IDK, but one thing is sure, I’m exhausted.

Oh, there’s only one thing, my phone doesn’t work. It worked in Korea, but I don’t know what’s wrong. It keeps going in and out of service. Hopefully I can get it to work. We’ll see. So if anyone really wants to contact me, just e-mail.

Last Weekend [at Andrews]

Why now? Truthfully, I know that Ellen White describes that we are not to “castle build;” but, rather, we are to guard our hearts. Yet, honestly, my guards are loosing position and falling from their post of duty.

To really note, this is my last weekend at Andrews University. Soon I will take my only final and begin packing. Then Thursday I am off to Southern (yippy!!). Excitingly, one week from right now I will be flying over the Pacific to Korea, then to Malaysia, then to the Philippines (hopefully).

In regards to the events of this past weekend, I have discovered much: forgiveness, realities, and many questions were answered.

Yesterday was the Fil-Am 6th year anniversary at their church site. It was enjoyable. We had a communion service, of which I was convicted to two things: I must preach a communion sermon some day and thank God for the forgiveness that is offered by the grace of Him alone. The day was exciting. We took a few pictures in the afternoon. And then in the evening I attended the last concert of the year, of which at least three of my friends were singers.

Afterwards, well, that’s just a long story. Hahaha.

Now, I must return to painfully try to study for tomorrow.

"The Sower went forth to Sow"

Last week I realized that I did not own a copy of the book Christ’s Object Lesson by Ellen G. White. So I determined that this would become a great devotional book for however long it takes me to read it.
In the first section of the chapter “The Sower went forth to Sow,” I have rediscovered some grand truths. White, in the first paragraph, even states that “Because of its simplicity the parable of the sower has not been valued as it should be.” And it is quite true. Either way, I highly recommend the reading of the chapter, and the book. From it I have discovered two new texts to memorize.

Jeremiah 23:28
“…And he that hath my word, let him speak my word faithfully. What is the chaff to the wheat? Saith the Lord.”

Prov. 30:5, 6
“Every word of God is pure: he is a shield unto them that put their trust in him. Add thou not unto his word, let he reprove thee, and thou be found a liar.”

She says all this after a grand discussion on the inspiration of Scripture and its grand importance starting on page 39 and onward. Highly recommended. And then she goes on to speak about the educational system – very enlightening.

Why Not's of Adventism: An Extra Dose of the Holy Ghost

When you think of the Holy Spirit, what do you think? For instance, how often do you hear sermons on the Holy Spirit? Yet without it, the church would be dead, Andrews University would have never existed, and there would be no Bible (or Spirit of Prophecy for that matter).

However, the Holy Spirit has always been around: It was at the beginning of earth’s history (Gen. 1:1-2), the beginning of human history (Gen. 2:7), the beginning of Israel’s exile (Exo. 14:19-21), in the form of wind (John 3), at the anointing of David (1 Sam. 16:14), the beginning of Christ’s ministry (Matt. 3:16), and at Pentecost and the beginning of the churches history (Joel 2:28; Acts 2). It even has as nearly as many illustrations as Christ himself, it has been described as fire (Exo. 4, Acts 2), a dove (Matt. 3:16), wind (John 3), the Comforter (John 14:16, 26; 15:26; 16:7), and many others.

And yet the Holy Spirit’s influence was not only seen by converts, but by heathens. It was the question that has been passed down from the lips of a heathen Pharaoh when electing Joseph as overseer of his kingdom, “Can I find such a one as this, a man in whom the Spirit of God is?” (Gen. 41:38), that evokes the sincerity and spirituality that a true follower of God is to posses. Others (converted or unconverted) can often tell that there is something different about this man or this woman. That is why the Holy Spirit wants to be personal: It attended Moses and the seventy elders (Num. 11); it was with Joshua (Num. 27:18); it gave Samson his strength four times over (Jud. 14:6); it was with Elijah and Elisha (II Kings 2:9); and even Jesus himself didn’t start a single miracle until he was baptized by the Holy Spirit (Matt. 3:16-17). It was only through the word of God and the power of the Holy Spirit that Jesus was led in the wilderness and resisted temptation (Matt. 4:1-11). And it was at the cross that Jesus closed his earthly ministry by quoting Psalm 31:5, “Into thine hand I commit my spirit” (Luke 23:46).

The Holy Spirit is so important that without it we would not have the Bible. “For the prophecy came not in old time by the will of men: but holy men of God spake as they were moved by the Holy Ghost” (2 Pet. 1:21). However the Holy Spirit not only inspired believers (and sometimes non-believers like Nebuchadnezzar), but the Holy Spirit is a most often forgotten agent in the production of all scripture which is profitable for our doctrines, reproof, correction, and instruction in righteousness: that we may be perfect (1 Tim. 3:16-17). We can become mature Christians only through the Holy Spirit. It is only through the power of the Holy Spirit that we can study and apply the words of the prophecy of this book (a.k.a. the Bible, particularly and contextually in this verse, Revelation), we will be blessed (Rev. 1:3) as we come to understand these words (Job 32:8), we can come to know the deep things of God (1 Cor. 2).

And yet, on another hand, oft times it seems that people [particularly, and in relation to this article, Seventh-day Adventist young people] forget that there is actually a spiritual warfare that surrounds every circumstance. There is a serious, literal, not always visible war over your souls and mine – even when you are studying, praying, in church, in the classroom, talking on the phone, eating, watching TV, listening to your iPod, and reading this article something around you is happening (Eph. 6:10-12). The whole universe is watching what you are deciding (I Cor. 4:9). So why not reevaluate?

And yet the call for us is “higher than the highest human thought can reach;” for God’s thoughts are not our thoughts, nor his ways our ways (Isa. 55:8-9). In reality, there are only two groups of people – those who walk in the Spirit and those who walk according to the flesh. And the Bible says that only those who walk in the Spirit will have no condemnation, because they are in Christ (Rom. 8:1). Yet the Bible says that God sent “his own Son in the likeness of sinful flesh, and for sin, condemned sin in the flesh” (Rom. 8:3). So instead of being condemned because of our sins, Christ condemned sin, so that “the righteousness of the law might be fulfilled in us, who walk not after the flesh, but after the Spirit” (Rom. 8:4). We can live a victorious Christian life today. The Holy Spirit was the promising agent to all those who will believe and accept the influences of his grace – a grace that teaches “us that, denying ungodliness and worldly lusts,” that “we should live soberly, righteously, and godly, in this present world [or age]” (Titus 2:12). And because we have been taught by this grace, we will be “looking for that blessed hope, and the glorious appearing of the great God and our Saviour Jesus Christ; who gave himself for us, that he might redeem us from all iniquity, and purify unto himself a peculiar people, zealous of good works” (Titus 2:13-14). God wants us to have a victorious life today in the Holy Spirit, why not experience a dose of the Holy Ghost? So that when the latter rain pours, we can experience an extra dose of the Holy Ghost like Elisha of old? Why not give our best for God?

Yet, truth be told, more often then not, our case it that “the spirit is willing, but the flesh is weak” (Matt. 26:41); however, God promises that the poor in spirit are blessed, “for theirs is the kingdom of heaven” (Matt. 5:3). It is without the Holy Spirit that the church will not grow, Christians will stay unconverted, people will not be changed, sins will not be just a thing of the past, victories will not be met, this article will not reach someone, and Christ will not return.

It is there in the last chapter of Revelation that we find that the Spirit and the church have to work together before Christ can return (Rev. 22:17); why not have that start here, at Andrews University? Why not have that start with you? And with myself? Why not have that start now?

It is not going to be “by might, nor by power, but by my spirit, saith the Lord of hosts” (Zech. 4:6).

Why not experience the Holy Spirit? Not just the limited influences that you and I feel and know when our consciences are pricked because we have done something wrong; but why not be led by the Spirit and resist the temptations? Why not have the Spirit lead our lives? Why not let the Spirit aid us in our studies? In our relationships? In our school? In us? Why not?

Why Not's of Adventism: Why Not Love?

Love… in its various forms, facets and features is without question one of the most interesting words every to be used by mere humans. We think we have it, own it, use it, abuse it, and loose it. But if I may state, love is not a thing, nor just a principle – love is a being. The Bible says that “God is love” (1 John 4:8). And the Bible says that if we do not love, we do not know God; for the only way to know God is to love (1 John 4:7). Let me thus ask this double meaning question, do you love? Meaning do you love people and do you know God?

Sometimes it is best to understand something, when it is established as what it is not. Let us try this method for just a moment – love does not envy, is not rash, is not puffed up, does not behave itself unseemly, does not seek its own, is not easily provoked, thinks no evil; does not rejoice in iniquity, it does not fail, and it does not vanish away (1 Cor. 13:4-8).

Love rather, by biblical definition, suffers, is kind, rejoices in the truth, bears all things, believes all things, hopes all things, endures all things. Love never fails, but it abides (1 Cor. 13:4, 6-8, 13). Even in simple survey, one can easily see that the Bible states emphatically what love is not, more then what love actually is.

Knowing therefore what love is, let me ask the question, as I ask myself, do you and I love? Do we rejoice in the truth? Are we willing to bear all things, believe all things, hope all things, endure all things for Christ and His word? For love will never fail us, and it promises to abide – the question becomes harder to answer, harder to fathom, but it is the truth and it is the test – will we love to the end? Will our love endure?

When times get tough, when things all around seem so dark and grime, will we still stand so firm? Will we see still preach, teach, and have the same urgency as we do? The truth is, if we do not have these qualities interwoven into our lives today, will we begin to have them tomorrow? Will our love for God test persecution? Who or what will separate you or I “from the love of Christ? Shall tribulation, or distress, or persecution, or famine, or nakedness, or peril, or sword” (Rom. 8:35)? What will drive you to deny the Lord? Would you still love God if your closest one was taken from you? Will you still love God if your closest one was found cheating on you? Would you still love God? Will you still love God?

In reality, the question is not asked by myself, but by Christ himself. In the last chapter of that last gospel, the book of John, three times Christ asks Peter, “Lovest thou me” (John 21:15, 16, 17)?” He’s asking, “Do you love me?” Peter actually responds, “Of course, Lord: you know that I love you.” But the third time he was grieved, because he had asked him a third time (the same amount of times that he denied his Lord). But let us take a quick look in what the original conversation went like. The word for “love” actually changes from agapas (a pure, unselfish love) to phileis (a loyal, and sometimes intellectual love). Going more like: “Do you agape [purely, unselfishingly] me?” Peter responding, “Oh, Lord, of course I Phileo [loyally love] you. “Do you agape [purely, unselfishingly] me?” “Oh, Lord, of course I Phileo [loyally love] you.” “Do you Phileo [loyally love] me?” “Lord, you know all things, you know I Phileo [loyally love] you.” There is a bit of a difference.

Thus, let me ask, do you Phileo [loyally love] Christ? Or do you agape [purely, unselfishingly] love Christ? If you do not, or have not, then you like myself, have at times fallen short. But now it is time that we rise. Let us do as Christ has instructed Peter to do, Feed his sheep (John 21:15, 16, 17) and follow him (vs. 19). In other words, do the work of the Lord and continue to follow him. It is time that we rise “higher than the highest human thought can reach.” This is God’s ideal for us. “For God hath not given us a spirit of fear; but of power, and of love, and of a sound mind” (2 Tim. 1:7). Let us love the Lord with not just our minds, but with our whole being – let us love the Lord our God with our whole heart, soul, might/strength, and mind (Deut. 6:5; Matt. 22:37; Mark 12:30; Luke 10:27). Then let us love our neighbor as ourselves. As the theological implications of this go much deeper, the truth is, the closer we draw to God, the closer we will become with one another – now, that is great relationships advice.

Will you love God? Then, why not love him who first loved you? Why not?

“For I am persuaded, that neither death, nor life, nor angels, nor principalities, nor powers, nor things present, nor things to come, nor height, nor depth, nor any other creature, shall be able to separate us from the love of God, which is in Christ Jesus our Lord” (Rom. 8:38-39).

Why Not's of Adventism: Why Could He Not Understand?

Has there ever been anything in your life that you just could not give up? It’s as if it has become a part of you and there is nothing more you can do about it. Maybe you grew up with a predisposition to a certain way of life. If you are anything like me, that being human, than you have more than likely suffered the affects of sin and struggled from day to day with not just the Lord but with temptations.

So often we hear about the power that Christ provides, as if it was something so transcendent that it could never happen to me, or to you. But the Bible also portrays a side of Christ that has almost been forgotten through the corridors of time – Christ very much understands our thoughts and feelings. He too learned through suffering (Heb. 5:8).

It is in the first description of the love in 1 Cor. 13, that the discovery is made that it (love) means more than just being patient. The original Greek suggests that the love described is a love that suffers long. It is willing to endure, bear, put up with, experience, tolerate, undergo, go through, and suffer the patience of waiting.

If I may make a bold statement – God loves you. And he loves you so much that he suffered for you. The question then is not can he give you the power, but will you accept his power? Often one can attend church and hear about the power of God, yet walk out without experiencing or believing that this power is offered to us today. We can often hear about Christ’s earthly ministry for others, His sacrificial giving of himself, and often (especially among Adventists) His soon return. But if I may pose the question, how often does one hear about what Christ is doing right now? Something that is just as important as his sacrifice on the cross.

Christ’s work on this earth was important, he not only died on the cross for your sins; but he bore our iniquities (Isa. 53:11). “He took not on him the nature of angels; but he took on him the seed of Abraham. Wherefore in all things it behooved (or compelled) him to be made like unto his brethren, that he might be a merciful and faithful high priest in things pertaining to God, to make reconciliation of the sins of the people. For in that he himself hath suffered being tempted, he is able to succor (or to help) them that are tempted” (Heb. 2:16-18). Christ understands your pain, he lived in this world. He was tempted like you, and like me, if not to a greater degree; but he not only died for you and me, he lived for you and me.

Christ not only died, but he lives. And I know that my redeemer lives (Job. 19:25). But, he could not be a faithful High Priest now, if he didn’t come like you and like me then (Heb. 2:17-18). Thus, Christ’s work in the heavenly sanctuary is so important that is can give us the power from sin today, the assurance of a new life today, and a victory that can last until the second return of Christ.

Christ understands how we feel. Have you felt lonely? Or betrayed? He too felt lonely and betrayed when one of his disciples betrayed him. Have you felt like temptations are strong and almost too overpowering? He too was tempted, and by Satan (Matt. 4). Christ reaches to our true felt needs, for he understands your pain.

His work on earth promised us the Holy Spirit (John 14:25-27, why not experience it? Why not experience that peace that the world cannot give (John 14:27)? Why not believe that Christ knows your ever weakness? Why not lean on Him who will not fail you? Why not grasp for His unfailing hand? Why not

Now unto him that is able to keep you from falling, and to present you faultless before the presence of his glory with exceeding joy, to the only wise God our Saviour, be glory and majesty, dominion and power, both now and ever. Amen.

Why Nots of Adventism: Prophecy or Fallacy?

Let’s say you were asked to explain why you believe in the Bible; what would you say? Not necessarily what you believe, but why you believe what you believe. Often, within modern Christianity, philosophical ideas and human reasoning try to justify the existence of God. But God seems to have already called us to an initial way and reason for believing the Bible and it must either be prophecy or fallacy (2 Pet. 1:19-21).

Unlike other world religions, Christianity is not just a call to believe, serve, and pray but to act in the world, which means to understand and teach others the message. This means that we must place implicit trust in the words of the Bible because if they are true then we are true, and will forever be secure (Isa. 40:8; 2 Pet. 1:19). It is not simply a call to an emotional encounter but to an intellectually deep-rooted belief that God’s word is sure because history affirms it and no one can deny it.

The question must be asked, “how was every Christians living in the first century able to escape death during the destruction of Jerusalem?” Eusebius, an early church historian remarked that no Christians perished in the siege of Jerusalem—where over 500,000 Jews horrifically died—because they remembered the words of Jesus saying: “But when you see Jerusalem surrounded by armies, then know that its desolation is near. Then let those in Judea flee to the mountains, let those who are in the midst of her depart, and let not those who are in the country enter her. For these are the days of vengeance that all things which are written maybe fulfilled.” (Luke 21:20-22). Or maybe one can explain the Bible’s ability to predict the exact order of the rise and fall of each empire – Babylon (Dan. 2:38), Medo-Persia (Dan. 2:39; 5:25-31), Greece (Dan. 2:39), Rome (Dan. 2:40); and then the dividing and never uniting of the Roman empire and future Europe (Dan. 2:41-43). So accurate was the Bible’s prediction that a Christian lawyer, Tertullian, exhorted Christians to pray for the continuance of Rome because Rome was to fall soon and once it did, it would be divided into ten parts and then Antichrist would appear (See: Froom, Prophetic Faith of Our Fathers, vol. 1, p. 257-8). Interestingly, Tertullian was predicting the fall of Rome 150 years before it happened! He was able to do this not by feeling assurance or looking into a glass ball but by carefully examining the Scriptures. Time would fail me to tell of the converting of King Nebuchadnezzar or how the Bible accurately predicted the exact name of Cyrus, one who reigned in the Persian empire during the time of Daniel, being predicted over 150 years in advance (Isa. 44:28-45:1; Dan. 1:21, 6:28; Dan. 10:1).

Perhaps this is why a former Greek philosopher turned Christian wrote, “There existed, long before this time, certain men more ancient than all who are esteemed philosophers, both righteous and beloved by God, who spoke by the Divine Spirit, and foretold events which take place, and which are now taking place. They are called prophets. These alone both saw and announced the truth to men, neither reverencing nor fearing any man, nor influenced by a desire for glory, but speaking those things alone which they saw and which they heard, being filled by the Holy Spirit. Their writings are still extant, and he who has read them is very much helped in his knowledge of the beginning and end of things” (Justin Marytr, Dialogue with Trypho, vol. 1, p. 198).

People can try to argue it but the word of God still stands sure. The question must be asked, where do you stand? Where do I stand? Are our feet planted on a ground that is made up of philosophical and highly motivated intellectual discussions and reasons? Or is it planted where Christ plans to grow a seed that is rooted in the biblical understanding of prophecy, of the words of truth and life?

Something is arising at an alarming rate among young Adventists. It seems as if there is something that is sweeping through all of Christianity that is probably causing more harm than other people than the Seventh-day Adventist Church. This something is the use of philosophical thinking and reasoning to try to justify the existence of God, something that we are called to beware of (Col. 2:8). But the Bible calls us to preach, teach, and understand the Bible through Christ (Col. 2:8; 1 Cor. 2). It is thus without the intellectual study of prophecy that many Adventists leave the church. Unlike other world religions, Christianity is not just another call to believe and serve but to intellectually believe in the word because of its truthfulness and reliability.

Why not, if this is the way that the Lord has led so many souls in the past, couldn’t it be true for us today? Why not, if Christ planned on this being the case, could we as a people not be living in the last days of earth’s history? Why not, if all the time prophecies of the Bible are complete, why are we not studying daily to gain a deeper experience with Christ today? Why not be planted on something grander, greater than any human can try to philosophize or humanize? Why not grow? Why not?

Hard Decisions

There are times that I know the Lord sooths my troubling heart. And today was one of those days. As some may know I am struggling with some hard decisions. Either way the Lord is keeping me calm and helping me to trust in him. Here is what I read that really spoke to me today:

Fret not thyself because of evildoers, enither be thou envious against the workers of iniquity. For they shall soon be cut down like the grass, and wither as the green herb. Trust in the Lord, and do good; so shalt thou dwell in the land, and verily thou shalt be fed. Delight thyself also in the Lord; and he shall give thee the desires of thine heart. Commit thy ways unto the Lord; trust also in him; and he shall bring it to pass. And he shall bring forth thy righteousness as the light, and thy judgment as the noonday. Rest in the lord, and wait patiently for him: fret not tyself because of him who prospereth in his way, because of the man who bringeth wicked devices to pass. Cease from anger, and forsake wrath: fret not thyself in any wise to do evil. For evildoers shall be cut off; but those that wait upon the Lord, they shall inherit the earth. For yet a little while, and the wicked shall not be: yea, thou shalt diligently consider his palce, and it shall not be. But the meek shall inherit the earth; and shall delight themselves in the abudance of peace. The wicked plotteth against the just, and gnasheth upon him with his teeth. But the wicked shall perish, and the enemies of the Lord shall be as the fat of the lambs: they shall consume; into smoke shall they consume away. The wicked borroweth, and payeth not again: but the righteous sheweth mercy, and giveth. For such as be blessed of him shall inherit the earth; and they that be cursed of him shall be cut off. The steps of the good man are ordered by the Lord: and he delighteth in his way. Though he fall, he shall not be utterly cast down: for the Lord upholdeth him with his hand. I have been young, and now am old; yet have I not seen the righteous forsaken, nor his seed begging bread. He is ever merciful, and lendeth; and his seed is blessed. Mark the perfect man, and behold the upright: for the end of that man is peace. But the transgressors shall be destroyed together: the end of the wicked shall be cut off. But the salvation of the righteous is of the Lord: he is their strenth in the time of trouble. And the Lord shall help them, and deliver them: he shall deliver them from the wicked, and save them, because they trust in him.

Why Not's of Adventism: Taught By God

It was in the last year that I met someone who was raised Adventist, but concluded that she should become an Atheist because how could God exist? Eventually I had discovered that she did not really think that God did not exist, but that the church was really messed up.

I guess one could say that she attended a typical Adventist church that was not very active nor godly. Even two of her closest friends became lesbians, and she was really disgusted with not just church but any formalized religion.

Within the next month I continually challenged her with one thought, “Have you studied your Bible? Why are you really leaving the church? Did you ever give God a chance?” These were questions that she never really thought about. And she basically concluded, like many Adventist today are concluding, that Ellen White was not a prophet, Sabbath doesn’t really matter, worship is personal, its all and only about relationships, what is that sanctuary thing, and eventually that one doesn’t need the Bible, and especially not formalized religion.

I wanted to challenge her to believe for herself. One really has to find Jesus for themselves. As one may see, if they will but study the word of God and really search the scriptures they will find Him (John 5:39b). The Bible is something that people throughout the last two hundred centuries were willing to die for, why not in this age where we have it at our connivance take time and open its pages. Why not put the iPod down, the video game aside, the video on hold, the phone on silent, and the computer down, and the life on pause?

We, as human beings have been gifted with the ability to learn for ourselves under the guidance of the Holy Spirit that which are spiritual things (1 Cor. 2:12-14). God has even been willing if we will really seek Him to comprehend the deep things of God (1 Cor. 2:10). Jesus even once told others to “search the scriptures for in them ye think ye have eternal life” (John 5:39). The Bible also teaches that we are to study to show ourselves approved unto God (II Tim. 2:15). Why not study the Bible? Why not?
